VILLEFRANCHE-SUR-MER, FRANCE
After a wonderful Morning in Eze, France (here’s the post if you missed it!), Caleb and I decided to jump back into an Uber so that we could spend the afternoon in another sea-side town, Villefranche-Sur-Mer. If you have ever scrolled through Pinterest and stumbled across photos of a delightful colorful town, there’s a pretty good chance that town was Villefranche-Sur-Mer. I had been dreaming about visiting this town for a few years, so to say that I was a bit excited would be an understatement.
Villefrance-Sur-Mer was about 20 minutes down the coast from Eze, so it was really quite easy to visit both Eze and Villefranche-Sur-Mer in the same day. All of our morning walking finally caught up to us, though, after we sat in the Uber for a bit, so we decided to enjoy a few relaxing hours of beach time before exploring this second French town. We stopped by a local shop to purchase some sunscreen and water, and then found a spot along the beach to enjoy.
One thing to note about beaches along the French coast, is that many of them are rock or stone beaches rather than sand beaches. This makes it a bit harder to comfortably lay out on the beach. There are chairs available for rent at various private beaches along the coast which we enjoyed later in our trip. We noticed that the beach in Villefranche-Sur-Mer was still made up of stones, but was not as rocky as the beaches we had seen in Nice, France. We decided to pass on the private beach for the day, and just laid out on our own towels. We loved this time at the beach so much that we almost came back the following day!
My favorite part about this day was just watching the many sailboats and yachts in the turquoise blue water as we sat at the beach. There were so many different sizes and types of boats. Next time we take a trip to the Mediterranean, I would love to take a sunset cruise along the coast. It would be a dream to see the Mediterranean Coast from that perspective.
As late afternoon rolled around, we both grew antsy to explore the town. We dipped our feet in the water one last time, and then packed up our stuff to explore. The town was far from crowded, and we enjoyed having the streets to ourselves as we wandered around.
Every alley of the town was laced with florals of all kinds, and it was amazing to see so much color everywhere! Though a small detail, I also loved the colorful french plantation shutters on all of the buildings.
We ended our exploration with another lookout overlooking the Mediterranean. This lookout was much closer to the water than the one we found in Eze. We could have spent hours upon hours walking through the streets that evening, but we were both ready for some dinner. I guess we will just have to visit Villefranche-Sur-Mer again soon! We headed back to Nice, found a local market, and cooked up some yummy dinner together back at our cozy French apartment instead.
